Hollywood is playing the long game this year, with a strategic lull in the fall designed to maximize the impact and payoff of its holiday blockbuster season. This comes after a period of strong performance from films like Weapons, which has grossed an impressive $148.8 million globally.
The success of Weapons and other 2025 hits like Jurassic World Rebirth ($828 million) has already put the industry in a strong position. By pulling back on major releases in the early fall, studios are avoiding market saturation and building audience anticipation for their biggest titles.
The lull will be characterized by a slate of smaller, more targeted films. While none are expected to be massive hits, they will keep the theatrical ecosystem running until the bigger films arrive. Titles like The Conjuring: Last Rites and One Battle After Another will be key performers during this time.
The payoff for this strategy is expected to be huge. Starting with Tron: Ares in October, the industry will unleash a powerful wave of blockbusters, including Wicked: For Good and Zootopia 2, that are designed to dominate the box office and end the year with massive revenues.
