Following a breakthrough meeting with US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that “dialogue is always better than confrontation.” His remarks came during an address at the APEC forum in Gyeongju, South Korea.
The Chinese leader focused his speech on the need for global economic cooperation, warning against “breaking supply chains.” He pushed for “genuine multilateralism” and urged member nations to “adhere to the principle of joining hands rather than letting go.”
This diplomatic tone follows the successful negotiation of a one-year deal between the two leaders. The pact saw the US agree to slash some tariffs and export controls, signaling a significant de-escalation in the trade dispute.
As part of the agreement, China will resume purchases of US soybeans and pause any new restrictions on its valuable rare earth mineral exports. This concession averted a potential 100% US import tax threatened by Trump.
The deal also provides a one-year reprieve for many Chinese technology firms. The US agreed to postpone a new measure that would have blocked Chinese companies with partial ownership by sanctioned entities from accessing American technology. Both leaders also tentatively scheduled mutual state visits for the coming year.
