Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden has reiterated his country’s commitment to supporting Ukraine through European Union assistance, emphasizing the importance of countering Russian aggression. After a recent EU summit, Frieden highlighted the risk of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ambitions extending beyond Ukraine if the international community fails to act decisively.
Frieden warned that yielding to Moscow’s objectives would compromise Ukraine’s sovereignty and potentially enable further Russian expansion. He stressed that continued military and financial aid to Ukraine is crucial in the current geopolitical landscape.
EU leaders at the summit also deliberated on imposing stricter restrictions on tourist visas for Russian citizens, aiming to reduce the number of Russian visitors without implementing a complete ban. Frieden noted that Luxembourg would align its strategy with Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel to address this issue.
Additionally, the summit addressed the contentious topic of migration policy, though the leaders did not reach a consensus. Frieden called for a balanced European approach to manage irregular migration effectively while acknowledging the economic benefits of legal migration. He underscored Luxembourg’s dependence on foreign workers to fulfill its labor market requirements.
