Trump to Sign Thailand-Cambodia Peace Treaty at ASEAN Summit in Malaysia

As President Donald Trump heads to Malaysia for the 47th ASEAN summit, he has revealed plans to sign a groundbreaking peace deal between Thailand and Cambodia, nations that have been entangled in territorial disputes for generations. The American president has taken credit for brokering the agreement, which he described as a “great peace deal” in communications from Air Force One.
The peace initiative comes in response to violent border clashes that erupted between Thai and Cambodian military forces in July 2025. The five-day conflict claimed lives and created a humanitarian crisis as thousands of civilians were displaced from their homes near the contested border areas. The severity of the situation required immediate international mediation.
Malaysia emerged as the key mediator in the conflict, successfully negotiating a ceasefire that was implemented in late July 2025. The Malaysian government has continued to play a central role in maintaining peace by coordinating ASEAN observers who monitor the truce and ensure both nations adhere to the terms of the cessation of hostilities.
President Trump’s visit to Malaysia serves multiple diplomatic purposes, including the peace deal signing and scheduled discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The president has announced that the signing ceremony will take place immediately upon his arrival in Malaysia, a decision made to accommodate the numerous world leaders and officials attending the historic event. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and other ASEAN leaders will witness the ceremony.
The peace agreement addresses a border dispute spanning more than 800 kilometers and involving several non-demarcated areas between the two Southeast Asian nations. The conflict has historically centered on competing claims to ancient Hindu temples, particularly Prasat Ta Muen Thom and Preah Vihear, located in the Dangrek Mountains. Recent diplomatic efforts have shown promising results, with both countries agreeing during an October meeting of the Joint Commission to advance boundary demarcation efforts and work toward a comprehensive Declaration of Thailand-Cambodia Relations to permanently resolve the border situation.
