Austria is evaluating the possibility of joining Luxembourg’s GovSat 2 satellite communications initiative as both nations aim to enhance their defense and security cooperation. This development follows Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner’s visit to Luxembourg, where she engaged in discussions with her Luxembourg counterpart, Defence Minister Yuriko Backes. The talks focused on broadening bilateral collaboration in areas such as defense, space, and cybersecurity. As part of this visit, there were also meetings with satellite operator SES regarding Austria’s potential involvement in the GovSat 2 program.
Highlighting the growing importance of secure satellite communications against a backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions, Tanner emphasized that increased collaboration could bolster the resilience of state communications and contribute to Europe’s strategic autonomy. The GovSat 2 project is specifically aimed at providing secure communication services, benefiting Luxembourg’s defense sector, the European Union, NATO, and partner countries. The satellite is planned for launch in 2029.
Additionally, Austria and Luxembourg have signed a letter of intent to deepen their cooperation across various defense-related domains, including cybersecurity, space technology, and military training. This agreement marks a significant step in strengthening the defense ties between the two countries, although Austria has yet to disclose any potential investment figures should it decide to participate in the GovSat 2 project.
The ambition to collaborate on the GovSat 2 satellite comes at a time when ensuring reliable and secure communications infrastructure is becoming increasingly pivotal for national security. Both nations appear committed to exploring ways to contribute to Europe’s defense capabilities and enhance their mutual defense strategies.
