Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commended Türkiye for its commitment to diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. This acknowledgment followed discussions in Kyiv with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. In a show of appreciation, Zelenskyy awarded Fidan the Order of Merit, Second Class, highlighting Türkiye’s significant contribution to peace initiatives.
The discussions between the two leaders covered the current diplomatic landscape, battlefield dynamics, and potential avenues for restarting peace negotiations. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Türkiye’s persistent mediation efforts and voiced optimism for enhanced cooperation. This includes the implementation of the recently ratified Free Trade Agreement between Ukraine and Türkiye.
Türkiye has maintained a balanced relationship with both Ukraine and Russia throughout the conflict, previously playing a key role by hosting peace talks in Istanbul. It also facilitated prisoner exchanges and supported the Black Sea grain initiative. During the meeting, Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to continuing the “Istanbul format” of negotiations and expressed readiness to host future peace discussions.
Additionally, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha indicated that Zelenskyy is open to the possibility of meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Türkiye, should the circumstances be favorable. This potential meeting underscores Türkiye’s ongoing role as a mediator in the search for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
