Ukraine continues its strategic strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, despite calls from former U.S. President Donald Trump for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cease these attacks. Trump has linked the strikes to rising global fuel prices and tighter diesel supplies. Ukrainian forces have reportedly targeted an oil facility in Russia’s Samara region, a ship in the Black Sea, and a facility involved in drone operations in the Oryol region.
Trump argues that Ukraine’s actions are exacerbating disruptions in global diesel supplies. However, energy analysts suggest that the ongoing conflict in Iran is a major contributor to the volatility in global oil markets. The Ukrainian offensive on Russian refineries has significantly impacted Russia’s refining capacity, leading to fuel shortages and rationing in some areas. In response, Russia has imposed broader restrictions on diesel exports, further straining international fuel availability.
Despite the ongoing military actions, Zelenskyy remains open to an energy ceasefire with Russia. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed proposals that would link halting Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure with stopping Ukrainian assaults on Russian oil facilities.
Meanwhile, Russia continues its missile and drone strikes across Ukraine, targeting critical energy infrastructure and other significant sites. Ukrainian officials have warned that these continued attacks could jeopardize electricity and heating supplies as winter approaches.
