US First Lady Melania Trump is set to host Russian and Ukrainian representatives at the White House on November 5, as part of her involvement in diplomatic efforts surrounding a recent ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine’s Kherson region. The White House has announced that Melania Trump will address this ceasefire initiative during an event scheduled for 11 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday.
The five-day ceasefire, which commenced on October 27 and concluded on November 1, facilitated the evacuation of several hundred civilians from Oleshky, with most opting to relocate to Ukrainian-controlled areas. Melania Trump’s office stated that she independently initiated contact between the Russian and Ukrainian sides and played a significant role in facilitating the humanitarian agreement.
Ukraine’s Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, credited Melania Trump’s team for securing the agreement and coordinating the evacuation efforts. He noted that representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States signed copies of the ceasefire document, with the US acting as a guarantor.
Despite the ceasefire, concerns remain about the situation in Oleshky. Ukrainian military personnel have warned that Russian forces might have exploited the temporary pause in hostilities to reposition equipment and fortify their positions. Ukrainian officials, however, have disputed reports of ceasefire violations, attributing some movements to demining operations.
Humanitarian assistance continues to be provided to civilians who remain in Oleshky, and further evacuation operations might be considered in the coming months. The upcoming November 5 meeting at the White House presents an opportunity for further discussion on the humanitarian agreement and potential diplomatic engagement between Russia and Ukraine. However, the White House has not disclosed the identities of the representatives expected to attend or details about the meeting’s agenda.
